Expanding Sustainable Livelihoods in Turkana County

Since mid-2022, Keep IT Cool has maintained an active presence in Turkana County, working closely with host communities along Lake Turkana. Through our aggregation hub in Lodwar, we provide localized cold storage for fish and other perishable products β€” helping fisherfolk preserve quality, reduce losses, and access premium markets in Nairobi.

Building on this success, we’re proud to roll out the FDP Poultry Project, launched in March 2025, supporting 500 poultry farmers from Forcefully Displaced Persons (FDPs) and host communities affected by climate change, conflict, or other crises.

This initiative empowers youth and women to engage in poultry farming as a sustainable livelihood β€” strengthening food security, nutrition, and household income.

To ensure resilience and sustainability, the project provides:
πŸ’§ Rainwater harvesting systems and water tanks
πŸ’‰ Weekly vaccination and veterinary services
🌾 Access to key inputs such as feeds, vaccines, and extension support
❄️ Cold chain and slaughter-as-a-service solutions for improved market access
πŸ“ Continuous training in biosecurity, poultry management, and agribusiness

The project is mainly supported by Acumen, with additional support from the IKEA Foundation, Hilton Foundation, and the Swiss Development Agency, alongside strong local partnerships with:
🀝 Turkana County Government (TCG)
πŸ“ County Directorate of Veterinary Services (CDVS)
🏦 Private sector partners such as Equity Bank
πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸŒΎ Community-Based Farmer Organizations (CBOs)

Together, we’re building climate-resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems across northern Kenya β€” one empowered community at a time.
